the Taipo River, had not been begun, only a low dam to enclose
the site having been constructed. We recommend that borings
should be taken before proceeding further. We also recommend
that the position of the bridge which, as at present determined,
will be practically at right angles to the direction of the
stream, should be altered and, further, that operations be
postponed until the dry season when but little difficulty
should be experienced in constructing the foundations for a
bridge to span the natural water-course.
No. 31. This is only a 5-ft. culvert. It is completed and the
embankment has been tipped to its full height on top of it.
No. 32. This is an accommodation bridge for a Chinese village,
consisting af a single arch, 10-ft. span. It is completed but
the embankment has net reached it from either and. According
to the drawings it is founded on boulder clay, which should
afford a satisfactory foundation.
No. 32-a. This is exactly similar to No. 31.

No. 33. This is a large bridge over the Lam Tsun Valley
River. It contains four girder spans
the centre ones of 60
feat, and the side ones of 40 feet span. Two abutments and two
piers are nearly completed and the concrete foundations of the
remaining pier are in progress. The abutments are constructed
entirely of cement concrete and are on piled foundations, the
piles being of China fir, 8 to 10 feet long. The piers are
constructed of concrete faced with granite ashlar. The concrete
foundations of the piers, which are about 3 føet thick, are not
piled, but have been constructed within cofferdams and are
reported to rest on gravel. The embankment has been formed
nearly up to the south abutment. The height of the piers to
the underside of the girders is about 35 feet and of the abut-
-ments about 33 feet.
From personal observation of the surrounding country,
we are doubtful as to the adequacy of the foundations and
would recommend that stops be taken to obtain
reliable borings
